Have Bulging Disc, Arm Muscle Weakness, Leg Numbness And Heaviness. Headache, Pain Behind Eyes And Neck. Help

I have bulging disc at c6/c7 bone spurs I have severe weakness in my arm muscles to the point I can hold things I dropped my coffee pot and broke it and sacroiliac joint dysfunction pain is so severe I cant walk at times numbness heaviness in my leg I have history of some arthritis but never had any of the symptoms I have now I was hit very hard from behind in 2011 I felt severe pain in my neck and pelvis area the pain his gradually gotten worse to point I am I can not go I am on pain tramadol 50 mg still hurt I hate taking the pain medicine but I can not go pain gets so severe I have severe bad headache to pain come from behind my neck up to behind my eyes never had headaches like this before please can you help me ?cause of the weakness in my arm muscles it takes me so long I have to stop arm gets so weak

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based upon your symptoms in the description, I am of the opinion that you are have cervical disc disease with radiculopathy. This means that a cervical disc is causing compression over the nerve root at that level causing symptoms of pain & weakness in the muscles of the arm.

The initial management for this condition is conservative by following means -

Rest: A soft cervical collar is advisable. It should not be used for more than a week or two as it may worsen the condition with prolonged usage.

Medicines: Analgesic are needed in the acute phase. Muscle relaxants are essential for relieving muscle spasms once the acute pain subsides. Neurotropic vitamins like METHYLCOBALAMINE (activated Vit B12) or PREGABALIN will help in alleviating the neuropathic pain.

Cervical traction: may enlarge the disc space, permitting the prolapse to subside. Intermittent cervical traction for not more than 30 minutes at a time. Weight upto 8kg can be added.

Physiotherapy: Once the acute phase of pain has subsided, Isometric strengthening exercises of the paravertebral muscles are started. Moist heat can be useful

Epidural steroids: are useful for patients with severe radicular pains in the limbs

If your symptoms are not resolving with the above measures, then you may need a surgical decompression.
