Have Pain Due To Shingles, Swelling, Scabs. What Can I Do?

Doctor: I'm In my 9th week of Shingles. The pain in located on the right side, starting around my right ear and extended to my right cheek, neck and shoulder. The swelling and extreme pain resulted in ugly scabs forming along my face from the hair line down to and including the neck. While the ugly scabs and pain went away, the neck area below the right ear still feels like a blow torch applied to the skin. Scabs continue to form along the hair line and the itching continues. My Doctor seems to feel that it'll all go away eventually and call him if I need any refilling of prescriptions for pain.
Today, while at my Eye Doctor for a prescheduled checkup, indicated he heard about some cure or easment of the pain and ultimate cure by a Doctor dealing with the nervous system. My plea is what can I do, or who can I see that has some answers to this situaltion. I realize this essay is speculative at best, but, it does show that after 9 weeks, I'm willing to dry anything. I do not like to rely on drugs and have been reluctive to taking them just to relieve the pain (they don't cure it). I am sorry I have rambled on, but, I would appreciate any suggestion. By the way, In three weeks, I'll be 90 years old.
Thank you for your attention.
