On Feb 11, I fell at work and got a fracture with complete separation on the 5th metatarsal in the middle of the bone. I walked on it for a week while haggling back and forth with my administrator to insure that I was following proper procedure to get a workman's comp doctors appointment, walking on it the whole time....I didn't know it was broken and have a high tolerance for pain, but after getting into the doc. I saw the complete fracture in the middle of the bone on x-ray. He sent me back with no restrictions in a walking hard sole boot. After the next week it was swollen and purplish in color. I was sent to the orthopaedic surgeon who wrapped it and put me back in the same shoe with a walker and wheelchair that I had to request. 6 weeks later, he declared it healed....I requested a second opinion and the new surgeon's x-ray shows the break lined up but still separated...He put me on restrictions, with walker and wheelchair and the same walking shoe....I see the doc tomorrow and am worried that I will need a pin surgery to completely heal...The doc said that it would form scar tissur as it is in time, but that's not the same as the bone actually knitting together. Should I request surgery. I am 59 year old female, have never broken a bone and have a good strong long limbs. My husband is going with me this time, and we want to know how to approach my healing. It has been nearly 3 months, and I walk on it some with out assistance, but still get foot and toe swelling after I do that....My restriction is walk 15 minutes per hour at work....Should I request surgery????? Thank you...
