Have Pain In The Knee, No Injury. X-ray No Problem. Some Relief With Treatment. MRI Shows Degenerative Joint Disease. Suggestions?

I am 66 years male, recently I had severe pain in my left knee and there was no injury or twist of the leg, I could not bear weight on it , i had to take rest for some time and I could walk and I took X-ray, it showed only age related changes, I consulted a Orthopaedic Surgeon he gave treatment which gave some relief,I was alright for 2 months with little pain.During lost month once again I got sever pain, I could not bear weight on my left leg and I had to use my uncle's walking stick to move about. With NSAID and knee cap I was feeling better, but not comfirtable, hence i Underwent MRI which showed 1.Features of degenerative joint disease. 2. Complex tear of body of medial meniscus. They advised me to under go Arthroscopy Correction, hence I would like to know is there any Ayurvedic treatment for same as I don't want to under go the procedure. Is there any alternative treatment. Please enlighten me. Thank you.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

At your age most common cause of knee pain is osteoarthritis.
There will always be degeneration in meniscus at you age.
Arthroscopy is supportive treatment,it will not cure disease but can give long term relief.
You can take cartilage protecting medication which are available in ayurveda also.
Till time take analgesic and apply knee hinged brace.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

The conservative management of degenerative joint disease is as follows -

MANAGEMENT OF OSTEOARTHRITIS (Apleys)
* PHYSICAL THERAPY : The mainstay of treatment in the early case is physical therapy, which should be directed at maintaining joint mobility and improving muscle strength. Other measures, such as massage and the application of warmth, may reduce pain.

* LOAD REDUCTION : Protecting the joint from excessive load may slow down the rate of cartilage loss. It is also effective in relieving pain. Weight reduction for obese patients, wearing shock-absorbing shoes, avoiding activities like climbing stairs and using a walking stick are worthwhile.

* ANALGESIC MEDICATION : Simple over the counter medications like acetaminophen is sufficient in most cases. If this fails to control pain, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug may be better.

* VISCOSUPPLEMENTATION: Hyaluronic acid injections given into the joint in prescribed dosages will give good short term relief in selected cases and helps in postponing total joint replacement surgery atleast for a year or two.

If you don't find any improvement in your symptoms with the above measures, a total knee replacement is indicated.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
