Have Severe Leg Cramps. Vitamin B12 Deficiency. Advised B12 Cap. Suggest Remedy

My mother is obese 106kg, went through a routine yearly checkup at a hospital , all the test results were normal except for Vitamin b12 deficiency for which she has been advised one B12 Cap a day. However there was no prognosis on her immediate problem of severe Leg Cramps at night almost every day , we thought that the health checkup might help to ascertain the cause ........Can you Advise what can be the possible cause and remedy for severe leg cramps at night.

Dear friend,

Thanks for posting your query on this website. I fully appreciate your concerns for your mother.

* The possible causes can be compression over the leg nerves (called 'carpel tunnel syndrome') , reduced calcium level in the blood, diabetes or hypothyroid state; or, defect in absorption of Vit. B12.

* You have not mentioned if Thyroid & Parathyroid hormonal assay, Serum calcium + phosphates; Total Vit D levels and, serum electrolytes were carried out or not, during yearly check up.

* A trial of injectable Vit B12 may be given first; your mother should start showing response within 3-4 weeks.

* In the meanwhile, get the advised investigation done.

* A daily dose of Tab Quinine daily at bedtime, for 2 weeks will relieve her problem temporarily, till such time investigation reports are received and response to injectable B12 would be known,

Please consult your treating doctor who will know how to proceed with the diagnosis and treatment.

I am sure that you will benefit from the advice.

Have a speedy recovery and a good health.

Fond Regards,

Dr.(Col) R Karanwal
