Have Type 1 Diabetes Using Insulin Pump. Scheduled For Hysterectomy. Will Diabetes Effect Surgery And Recovery?
I am scheduled for a hysterectomy using the robot. I am also a type 1 diabetic using an insulin pump. How will having diabetes effect my surgery and recovery? Will my pump stay hooked up during surgery and while in the hospital? Will my glucose levels be monitored during surgery? I hear that they tend to get very high during this time.
The procedures regarding the use of the insulin pump before and during surgery can vary between institutions.
For minor surgeries it is usually continued though in some major surgeries it is discontinued during the procedure and restarted in the post op period.
Normally in the case of an elective surgery such as yours the surgeon would speak to your endocrinologist to set up a plan for the surgery. You may want to speak to your doctors to find out what is the proposed plan.
Surgery can raise blood sugar levels because of the body's stress response but your doctors will be able to address any increase.
I hope this helps
