Hello, I am a 19 year old male with Osteoporosis and 7 compression fractures (T1-T4; L1-L3) and 2 bulging disks. I am on bed rest 14-18 hours out of the day and have lost my social life and any plan for the future. My pain specialist refuses to prescribe me narcotic pain killers because of my age. I have tried all the non-narcotic pain meds he's given me and have undergone many physical therapy sessions. what should I do, I feel helpless

Hello,
Welcome at HCM.

I am astonished to see your details. At this age the osteoporosis is one of the uncommon diagnosis. This can be there due to various reasons like-

-Excessive se of steroid medicines

-Alcohol

-Genetic syndrome or diseases

-Endocrine gland disorders like hyperparathyroidism, thyroid disorder.

-Malignancy

You should first evaluate the reason behind this.

At present there are some recent medicines which are very helpful in treatment of osteoporosis like-

-Vitamin D therapy (800IU per day)

-Bisphosphonate medicines like riserdronate, alendronate & zolendronic acid preparations.

-Hormone replacement therapy

For relief of pain at this age your doctor may add some anti depressant preparations like amitryptiline or escitalopram. These medicines enhances the effect of analgesia. In addition to this other physiotherapy measures like TENS therapy may be helpful for you.

Hope this all will help you.

With best wishes.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.
Osteoporosis with wedge compression fractures at an age of 19 years sounds unusual and abnormal. I think you should be evaluated properly for the underlying cause of osteoporosis and should be treated accordingly.
Simply lying on bed without any physical activity also leads to weakening of bones (bone resorption) contributing more to osteoporosis.
Pain killers at your age should not be prescribed for longer periods for obvious reasons. I suggest you to undergo complete workup for your osteoporosis.
Hope this helps
