Having Swelling On Knee Cap. Suffered Injury. Having Intense Pain. Could This Be A Torn Meniscus?

Slight swelling to the left of the knee cap with stinging pain. The knee is slightly stiff due to the swelling and the cap appears to be flatter than the other knee. I suffered an injury to that knee several years ago. There is no joint pain. The pain is very intense at night when the leg is at rest. I take Aleve for temporary relief but the pain is now occurring during the day. Could this be a torn meniscus?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

I feel that your past injury (several years ago) has got no relationship with your present problem of knee pain.

It is unlikely to be a torn meniscus as meniscal injuries generally produces pain and locking episodes only during daily activities but not at rest.

I suggest you to have an MRI scan for your knee joint which will pickup all the soft tissue problems inside the knee.

Consult an orthopedic surgeon for further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
