Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

A normal side effect of an IUD is bleeding, but is not considered an emergency and an indication for removal of the IUD. But, pain is one serious complication which is the only indication for removal of an IUD.

But, in your wife's case, if there is severe bleeding, I would advice you to discontinue the IUD,(i.e. go for a removal), and discuss other contraceptive options like birth control pills, condoms, spermicide gels, etc.

I would also request you to get her routine blood levels done, to check if the bleeding has resulted in anemia, and to correct it accordingly under a doctor's supervision.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes
