High BP, Swelling In Legs, Ankles, Feet, Leaking Fluid. Undergone Hysterectomy Years Ago. Suggestions?
Hi, My name is Ellecia and I am very concern with my mother's health. She is over weight first of all, she has high blood pressure, and she has had a hysterectomy about 28 yrs ago. For some time now her lower legs, ankles, and feet will swell so large and her lower legs close to her ankles will become discolored, a dark black. A month ago she was standing in the kitchen and they begin to leak fluid. I'm not sure what is causing this, but I was wondering if maybe you have seen these types of symptoms before and can give me a little information.
The leakage of fluid that you are seeing is due to the severity of the swelling in the limbs.
Swelling of the feet and legs can occur for different reasons. The most common causes are : (1) heart disease - this is common in persons with a history of hypertension as in your mother's case because the blood pressure can place stress on the heart. It would be associated with other symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations.
(2) liver disease- this can also cause some swelling, may also be associated with jaundice
(3) kidney disease
(4)venous disease involving the lower limbs- in this case there may be a history of varicose veins
It would be best for your mother to visit her doctor for an assessment. This would include history and examination along with investigations such as ECG, kidney and liver function tests.
I hope this helps
