History Of Knee Infection. Now Taking IV Antibiotics For Knee Replacement Infection. Why Is It Happening?

I had b/l knee replacements in 6/2004. In 4/2008 I developed an infection in my right knee which I became septic. I had surgery which cleaned out the area and the plastic parts were replaced. I was sent home on IV antibiotics for 6 wks. then an infection in my L knee & same procedure was performed. In April Strep B was detected. In June 2009 my R knee became infected again- this time the prosthesis was removed, antibiotic spacer was put in and again IV antibiotics were given, This happened again in late 2010 to my left knee. Now in May 2013 BOTH knees became infected where they were cleaned and all plastic parts replaced and I was given IV antibiotics. No pathogens grew last 4 infections. why is this happening?

Welcome to HealthCare Magic

I hope you are doing good . i can understand your concern. By studying the whole scenario you shared with us all i can say is the main problem is infection. There could be the few causes behind it. They are not using properly sterilized equipments or you are not taking care of your wound or the Antibiotics they are giving you does not cover the infection.

I don't know where are you doing your surgeries from but even in the hospital we work we get almost 8 percent of our patient back with infected wound. You should focus on sterilization and Proper antibiotics to give you better cover against the bacteria like you mentioned above.

I hope have answered you query , feel free to ask if you have any query. Wish you good Health.
Regards.
