Horrible Pain In The Foot In The Toe Area All The Time. Cannot Touch It Or Walk Either. Had Bad Ankle Sprain In The Same Foot Long Time Back. How Do I Reduce The Pain?

if you could maybe answer this question for me , i am dealing with horrible pain at the top of my foot by my toes. it has been occurring for several months off and on , in the middle of the night, when in i wake up and through out the day, the pain is so severe i cant even touch the top of my foot / toes , i cant even walk on it tonight . i do not work so i dont wear certain types of shoes , i wear keds shoes for the most part but i am home usually and wear no shoes but slippers, in 2006 i had a bad sprain on the ankle of the same foot however it took months for the swelling to go down and the swelling was at the top of my foot , i was in a soft cast for 2 weeks then an air cast , im so uncertain if this is anything to be concerned about , but the pain is getting worse . thank you for any advice you may be able to give,

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description, I suspect that your symptoms could be due to an acute inflammatory pathology affecting your toe joints. There are numerous conditions that involve the toe joints. The commonest one being Acute GOUT.

Xrays of the involved joints and Hematological investigations will help in arriving at a possible diagnosis of your problem.

Symptomatic pain relief can be obtained by taking antiinflammatory medications like Advil or Aleve as needed.

I suggest you to consult an orthopedic surgeon for evaluation and further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
