How Can HIV Be Treated?

I am an HIV elite controller for 37 years (1983+5) as calculated in San Francisco. My HIV physician continues to push medication treatment. I have never had and HIV related illness and haven t had a cold of flu in the past 20 years. I need advice and am considering choosing a new provider. Although I have never been anywhere near and AIDS diagnosis, my ppc at the time suggested that I take AZT, D4T and 3CT and became extremely ill within 5 weeks and stopped taking recommended medication. I moved to Tucson in 2010 and the HIV specialist insisted that I take HIV meds. against my better judgment and I was hospitalized within 7 months. Why the push for medication for those of us who are asymptomatic? I believe that I am allergic to HIV medications and am currently reviewing another set of medications that my primary care physician wants me to take. It is counter intuitive to take a medication for a chronic condition that can cause serious side affects. Again, I want to emphasize that I have never been hospitalized or had an HIV related illness or condition. Thank you for your assistance.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

First of all, my hearty congratulations to you for remaining as an elite controller. You had not mentioned your present viral load and CD4 count. On the basis only your treatment has to be planned. AZT and d4T combination is strictly contraindicated. 3 NRTI is also never encouraged. d4T is phased out throughout the world as recommended by world health Organization because of its dreadful complications. Your combination drugs prescribed were wrong. Other good combinations (better tolerable) are available. When there is a virus inside your body and when there is a continuous process of elimination of the virus and the ill effects of this inflammatory reaction in every important tissue of your body will lead to your life expectancy to become shorten. I think you don't want this sequel in your life. Better to start the drugs and continue the same life long and remain protected.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
