Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 63 yo F with a hiatal hernia, not sure if it is sliding. I have a feeling of trapped gas with achy pain Not burning pain) radiating outward from the lower left sternum area. I have tried everything, tums, zantac, bicarbonate, and soda water to try to clear the gas. I have even tried to force my self to vomit. If I do get a small belch some relief is provided and then the pain returns. Any suggestions?
Here are some things to try. The medication Simethicone is helpful to some people. It is available over the counter in preparations such as Gas-X.
Also consider limiting the more gas producing foods such as broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, green peppers, onions, peas, radishes, beans, melons, prunes and raw potatoes.
Smaller meals may help. Going for a short walk after meals may also be helpful.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Kathy Robinson
