How Can Bleeding During A Bowel Movement After An Appendectomy Be Treated?

I had an appendectomy 12 days ago. Last Thursday morning I had a bowel movement that was mostly blood. Later in the day I had a bowel movement with just a trace of blood and 2 others with no blood. Tonight after dinner I've had 2 bowel movements and they were both almost all blood like last Thursday. I did have 1 1/2 beers.

General Surgeon 's  Response

* So far as symptoms narrated here, the blood in bowel movement is GI bleed which can have various reasons responsible as

- Alcohol induced bleed from an ulcer
- Constipation induced hemorrhoid bleed
- Intestine infection
- Inflammation of operated stump of appendix
- Drug induced - others.

* In my clinic, I recommend:
- Per rectal and proctoscope examination to rule out hemorrhoid.
- To get smooth bowel movements with high fiber diet, plenty of liquids and bulk forming laxatives.
- Avoid spices, non veg, junk foods which can provoke bleed.
- Check the drug basket thoroughly.
- Avoid alcohol, smoking strictly.

* Regular follow up evaluation of the patient on alternate day basis.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Mostly after surgery you may be constipated for few days lead to hard stools and which may cause bleeding
If you have hemorrhoids or fissure in another can cause bleeding. Appendix stump bleeding may be seen in few cases.
Please consult your treating doctor and check for stool examination and per rectal examination for bleeding.
Avoid alcohol, avoid low fiber diet and spicy food. Use syrup Lactulose after dinner for five days.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
