How Can Chronic Diarrhea Be Treated?

My Dad is 97 yrs old and has chronic diarrhea. He also Furosemide 20 mg; Amiodarone 200mg; Warfin SOD 3mg; Metroprotal 25 mg. His dr took him off of his cholesterol med b/c of it affecting his kidney numbers which were in the 600. He was prescribed cholestyranube for the chronic diarrhea but I know this drug is also used to lower cholesterol. I am concerned about this fact. Please advise. He was also prescribed diphenoxylatel to try for the diarrhea. Please give some insight on these 2 drugs with consideration of the drugs my Dad are also taking. Thanks.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Cholestyramine is also used to treat diarrhea.

A number of different medications have more than one indication or use.

There are no known interactions between cholestyramine and the diphenoxylate, they can be safely used together

His doctors should try to find the cause of his chronic diarrhea. Some of the common causes include infection, irritable bowel syndrome, uncontrolled diabetes, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel disease.

I hope this helps.
