How Can Chronic Fibromyalgia Be Treated?

Hi I'm a 72 year old female whose husband passed away about 5 years ago. I have been troubled with fibromyalgia for my entire adult lifetime. As I have aged the pain is OUT OF CONTROL. My family physician, who understood my pain and kept me supplied with Tramadol, made my life somewhat tolerable ---but he retired! I decided to stay with his son who was in practice with him. He knows nothing about fibromyalgia and feels 1 tablet a day is plenty. I am ready to tear my skin and muscles from my bones because I cannot sleep and the pain is unbearable. I need a specialist immediately!

Dear Madam,

I can’t imagine how hard this is for you, but I am sure with the proper medicines your pain can be handled well.

The FDA approved medication milnacipran (savella) is specifically formulated for the management of fibromyalgia. It increases serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the body by inhibiting their re-uptake. The medicine can also be administered in elder population with fibromyalgia.

Please consult with your doctor about the medicine. Before taking the medicine certain lab values (for renal, liver functions) and concomitant drugs should be evaluated. If there is no contraindications your doctor may prescribe the medicine starting with a low dose and eventually the dose is increased to give its maximum effect to control symptoms of fibromyalgia.

I hope the new medication will help to manage your condition. Please, feel free to ask me more in HCM if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
Dr.Malik
