How Can Chronic Headaches Be Treated?

My 81 year old friend had eyelid surgery two months ago to lift his eyelids. Several days after surgery, he began to have very painful headaches. Now the light bothers him and seems to trigger the headaches but he also has them when he is in darkened room. The stabbing pain has moved from above his eye to an area around his ear. His vision was a little blurry several days ago. He has been to a neurologist and opthamologist and there are no answers. He has had several tests which were negative. He is unable to have an MRI as he has a pacemaker. He is trying to get an appointment with a neuroopthamologist and was put on a waiting list and told that he would be seen by the end of the year. He was given some steroid pills which only helped slightly. Do you know of another specialty he might try?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

He may be having cluster headache probably. Which is treated with oxygen mask delivery, dihydrogen ergotamine, sumatryptan or verapamil may be used . Avoid coffee tea, alcohol and smoking may use ful. However, as the specific underlying cause isn't known, it may take some time to control the headache cycles. Do yoga and meditation if symptoms not improved please consult your doctor. He will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
