How Can Concurrent Diarrhea And Constipation Be Treated?

I've been feeling unwell for the last two months. On and off diarrhea, improved with benefibre for a couple of weeks, however I still had the occasional night where I ate something like beans and ended up sick the entire night from it. The last week however has been very bad for me. It started with diarrhea for a day, then constipation, but this feeling like I was going to have diarrhea (I didnt), almost like my whole lower area just felt full. I had recently been drinking smoothes with whey and milk, and had a couple of poor nights of eating AFTER this started. Today was the first for me however. I had a stool finally in the morning, and it was green and undigested food was in it (it usually is for me), it was on the loose side but still formed, but two hours later I had diarrhea, and it was extremely painful for me, I noticed that I even had blood on my toilet paper after wiping many many times, but there was no blood in the stool itself, and never has been. I am now in pain, my whole rectal area hurts, and it feels as though I am going to have painful diarrhea, I have a lot of gas, and when I let go of gas they are wet and it feels like it will turn into diarrhea. And yet, if I go to the toilet, nothing will come out, but it feels like water could burst out. I am extremely panicked, and to make matters worse, I do have anxiety and am now worrying about what could be wrong with me. I just turned 23 yesterday, I eat very well, have fibre, eat lots of fruits, never eat junk food, and recently started to excercise. I have mitral valve prolapse, and thyroid and diabetes runs in the family, however I have always been at a healthy weight. I am only on the birth control pill, and I react easily to any and all medications. Please if you could help me out and give me some advice I would appreciate it so much.

Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Your symptoms are nonspecific but suggestive of benign digestion disorder called IBS or irritable bowel syndrome. This is manifested with bloating or diarrheas with pain and abdominal discomfort.
As remedies you should: Look at your diet. If it contains a large amount of carbohydrates that are difficult to digest, try to replace them. Carbohydrates that are easier to digest, such as potatoes, rice, and bananas, are good substitutes. Also try to eat around five to six small meals a day instead of three larger ones to help your digestive process.

Chew properly to avoid doing anything that may increase the amount of air that you swallow. This includes making sure that you are chewing your food properly, and avoiding chewing gum or smoking. Also, drink some peppermint tea, chamomile tea and ginger. In severe cases colonoscopy should be done and some medications recommended.

Wishing you good health.
