How Can Dementia Be Managed?

My mother in law is showing signs of dementia. She is 90 years old. for example... tonight she was up with her walker trying to go up stairs saying it was her bedroom, it has not been for 20 years. She also mentioned someone name Charlie was with her...No one there. What should we be doing to help with her symptoms and care?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

She may be with dementia with visual hallucinations. She may need to take drugs like Tacrine, Galantamine or Donepezil for dementia. For visual hallucinations may need neurophysician/psychiatrist consultation need anti psychotic and anti depressants. She may need physical or emotional support. Please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
