Hello!
Thank you for asking on HCM!
Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that needs treatment for many years (not just some months).
The antiepileptic drugs have several side effects, but it is important to choose the right drug and the right dose, based on the age and the type of seizures.
The side effects usually occur when a higher dose is used and are not very common. In case of such problem, the therapy may be changed.
But if we consider the benefits of these drugs towards the possible complications of seizures, I assure you that the therapy is in a great advantage.
For some antiepileptic drugs the right dose may need regular
blood plasma levels monitoring, to avoid any dosage mistakes.
EEG, antiepileptics plasma levels, and routine blood tests must be repeated during follow ups.
I would recommend you to perform a brain
MRI scan, which is more specific than
CT scan for Epilepsy. If a lesion is found, surgery may be an option of treatment.
Hope to have been helpful!
Greetings! Dr. Aida
