How Can High Fever And Vomiting In A Child Be Treated?

Please help me! My daughter who is 6 years old is sick and I have taken her to the ER and just said she has a virus and told us to go home. She has had a temp. Of 103 to 106.5 and ibu and Tylenol are not helping! She has been throwing up and will not eat or drink! She is so so sick and nobody cares! So sad!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

How long has your daughter been sick? Besides fever and vomiting is she having other symptoms like diarrhea, cough, runny nose, skin rash, stomach pain, sore throat? Does she have similar episodes of vomiting every so often? Is she showing signs of dehydration? Like:

-Makes no tears
-Dry mouth, lips, and tongue
-When you gently pinch the skin over her abdomen, does it immediately go back to its normal position or does it feel doughy and take a couple of seconds to go to normal position?
-Is she urinating with the same frequency she does when well I suggest that you sponge her down entirely while she sits in the tub of lukewarm water for around 10 minutes. Pat her skin dry. Don't offer her anything to drink and allow her to get into bed and sleep. I hope this will allow her stomach to quiet down. After 2-3 hours awaken her (if she is not already awake) and see if she is interested in drinking a some(2-3 oz) of Pedialyte or soda. First, let these liquids warm up to room temperature because sometimes cold drinks can bring on stomach cramps. Then let her get back into bed for another couple of hours and repeat the same process. You can do this for 6-8 hours. If there has been no vomiting ask her if she would like something to eat. If she does, allow her to select what she wants. If things go well(I hope they do), in about 2 days she ought to be back to her regular diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
