How Can Pain And Swelling In The Knees Be Treated?

My mother is 97 years old and has two knee replacements. last Monday she fell on her knees and has since experienced a lot of pain and has some swelling. She has pain meds from her doctor but my sister can t really get her into a vehicle for an appt. She is in a wheel chair and can only stand for short periods of time. Should we be icing the knee daily and at what intervals?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms of your mother seem to be related to the trauma.

I recommend using painkillers for the pain such as Acetaminophen.

I also recommend using ice therapy for 15 to 20 minutes three times a day for local application.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi,
