How Can Pain And Swelling In The Knees Be Treated?
Thank you. I am an RN, worked for years in pre-op. I am a tennis player and golfer. This past weekend while visiting grandchildren in NJ , I had a slip in mud, did not fall, recovered myself. However 2 days later my knee swelled up to twice its size. This is day two of pain and big swelling. I think it is a bit better, my question is..... why, is the left lateral tendon making a snapping sound every time I move? It does not hurt when it snaps. Hope you can help, and thanks again.
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can. In your case, there are few possible causes and if there was no injury then some other chronic disorder may be present. Without more information it is not enough to determine the diagnosis. It could be a hematoma (bleeding in the tissues) or a swollen knee joint capsule. If it's in the back of the knee then it could be a Baker's cyst. Clinical examination (and perhaps fluid aspiration if there's any) would help to determine the diagnosis. Either an orthopedics specialist or your primary care physician can do that.
Until then you can try to apply ice packs (not directly on the skin - wrap them with a towel) and perhaps use some painkillers starting with paracetamol (acetaminophen) and advancing to NSAID if paracetamol is not enough and there's no contraindication for NSAID.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time. Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
