How Can Pain Around An Injection Site On The Buttocks Be Treated?

Hello, I had an injection site reaction in my buttocks. I take Extavia for MS. It is extremely painful but there is no discoloration so I don t know if it is simply a bruise from the shot. The injection area is tight and I can feel a knot . The discomfort and knot developed several days after the injection. It is painful both when I sit down & when I move and ibuprofen doesn t help. As I mentioned, this hasn t before, and while I don t feel as if it is an emergency. I am concerned enough to consult a expert. Thank you for your time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

A side effect of an intramuscular injection like Extavia is that it could cause problems at the injection site. Make sure you use an alternate site next time.

Currently, use a cold compress, and take a diclofenac if required. If this does not go down in the next two days, you could consider visiting your doctor to evaluate the same.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
