How Can Pain In The Elbows Be Treated?

A year ago I had tennis elbow and was unable to bend my elbow at all. I had a steroid shot and was told I have slight arthritis. I am aware of the pain every day, but it doesn t stop me from doing anything, including a weight class where I use 5 lb. weights maximum. Is this something to just put up with as long as it doesn t get worse? There is slight swelling, but only enough for me to notice and my elbow bends all the way.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Tennis elbow is a type of tendinitis -- swelling of the tendons -- that causes pain in the elbow and arm. These tendons are bands of tough tissue that connect the muscles of your lower arm to the bone. Usually tennis elbow will heal on its own. Treated with tennis elbow straps, cold compression, physical activity, local steroid injection may help. If you have a severe case of tennis elbow that doesn't respond to two to four months of conservative treatment, you may need surgery. In the procedure, the damaged section of tendon usually is removed and the remaining tendon repaired. Surgery works in about 85%-90% of cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
