How Can Pain In The Lower Back And Buttocks Be Treated?

Thank you. I probably need some assistance. Saturday night I missed a step and fell onto a hard tile floor while babysitting my three grandkids in Florida. Initially my right arm hurt and all of my lower abdomen hurt in the front and the back. I felt better yesterday after resting what I could. Today I traveled for 8 hours to get back home to Kansas. The pain worsened as the day went on, but I was having to walk long distances to get to the next gate of my three leg trip. By the time I got back to Kansas I could hardly walk. The pain was in my left buttocks and up into my lower back. When I got home a bit ago I took two tablets of hydrocodone & acetaminophen that was prescribed back in August of 2014. It says 5mg/325mg. I never needed it back then. I took two tablets. I am 66 years old and am not on any prescription drugs and rarely use medications in my normal life. I m wondering if I did the right thing. If I m not better tomorrow, I plan to go see my doctor. I am pretty naive when it come to medicines. I m a klutz, was in a hurry, with three boys being rambunctious and and the step was in the dark. I wasn t being as careful as normal. Thank you in advance for your help. YYYY@YYYY Beverly Kavouras

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It sounds like a good idea to see your doctor. Although it is most likely a bruise, persistent pain in the back after a relevant trauma could also indicate a fractured vertebrae, which, in most cases, can be treated conservatively or with a corset.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
