Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I have a sister-in-law who has diverticulitis. She experienced pain for about a month till she couldn handle it and her Dr told her to get to the hospital. Doctors , rather surgeons were conflicted about whether Or not to cut and try to reconnect or stoma.. She was put on a very strong antibiotic and is now, with a port, going to the hospital daily for a month to hopefully clear it up. She has an abysis in the lowere colon and Dr s say that she may still need surgery in a month. What do you think the prognosis is fo her ??
For acute phase of the recurrent diverticulitis antibiotic therapy is required but once the acute phase settles down severe and drastic lifestyle changes have to be followed by the patient for many months to avoid recurrent attacks. So I'm sorry my dear but if you are sure its diverticulitis then broad spectrum antibiotic have to be taken for 5 to 7 days.
I would suggest you take Clindamycin once daily with Metronidazole thrice daily for 5 days. They would cover both bacteria as well as protozoa, however, you would need a prescription for the same as antibiotics are not over the counter. Probiotic etc would help but if its diverticulitis then you have to take antibiotics.
Hope I have answered your query.
