How Can Painful Osteoarthritis In The Left Knee And Spine Be Treated?

I have severe osteoarthritis in my left knee, spine and both thumbs. Had both hips and right knee replaced. NSAIDS don’t even touch the pain unless Intake them round the clock. But then I get severe acid reflux. Now I am taking Celebrex and it helps but I still have pain. My Dr has been giving me hydrocodone but says he won’t keep giving it to me because of the opioid crisis. I only take it before bed so I can get rid of the pain and have a decent night’s sleep. What else can I take for my pain? I have tried Tylenol 3but it is not as effective as hydrocodone. Do I need to see a pain mgmt Dr. to get what I need?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think that with both knees and hips replaced you are more worried about pain in spine and thumbs.

I suggest that you start spinal exercises under supervision of a physiotherapist and take local steroid injections in both thumb joints. You can take Hydrocodone as pain killer if the pain is severe.

In my clinical practice, I have found that exercises to build back muscles are the best treatment for back pain.
