How Can Persistent Vaginal Yeast Infection Be Treated?

I have had what I believe to be a yeast infection for a couple months. I have made a doctors appointment but it s not until April 17. It s irritating because it had a really bad smell and I constantly have to use a panty liner. I have taken over the counter meds and the creams and it is still here. What can I do to help?

Hello Dear. If you have had a yeast infection before and can recognize the symptoms, and you aren't pregnant, you can treat yourself at home with medicines you can buy without a prescription. You can use an antifungal cream, or a suppository that you put into your vagina, or antifungal tablets that you swallow.

If your symptoms are mild, you may want to wait to see if they clear up on their own.

If you use a cream or suppository to treat the infection, don't depend on a condom or diaphragm for birth control. The oil in some medicines weakens latex, the material often used to make these devices.

Many women have infections that come back. If you have more than four yeast infections in a year, see your doctor. He or she may do some tests to see if your yeast infections are being caused by another health problem, such as diabetes.

For simple yeast infections, your doctor will usually prescribe a one- to three-day regimen of an antifungal cream, ointment, tablet, or suppository. These medications can be in prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) form.

Common medications include:

1. butoconazole (Gynazole)
2. miconazole (Lotrimin)
3. Monistat
4. terconazole (Terazol)
5. fluconazole (Diflucan)

You can treat vaginal yeast infections with natural remedies if you would like to avoid taking prescription medication. Some popular natural remedies include:

1. coconut oil
2. tea tree oil cream
3. garlic
4. boric acid vaginal suppositories
5. plain yogurt taken orally or inserted into the vagina

Hope i have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.
All the best
With warm regards
