How Can Severe Bursitis Of Hips Be Treated Other Than Steroid Shots?

I have severe Bursitis of the hips! Can t sleep due to the pain. Have had Steroid shots every 3 months and they do work. Is there another solution? I am afraid the shots will stop working. The pain is so bad! I had Spinal Fusion 3 years ago and when the Bursitis acts up so does the back pain! Help

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Bursitis means inflammation of the bursa (fluid-filled sac) of the hip joint. Steroid injections help ease the inflammation. Other advice we give include:

- rest the hip joint
- try to protect from any trauma
- bend your knees when you lift; if not it will cause extra pressure on your hips
- alternate activity with breaks
- try to maintain a healthy weight to avoid putting extra pressure on your hip
- before running a physical activity should do some warming up activities
- regular exercises of the hip joints (as per specialist advice) will help too.
- sometimes there are some assistive device that will help relieve the pain and pressure on hip; ask your orthopedic specialist for that.
- should rule out infective bursitis as prescription antibiotics will treat that

If all these treatment will fail, surgery last alternative.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
