How Can Severe Diarrhea And Dark Stool Despite Taking Imodium And Pepto-Bismal Be Treated?

I have had diarrhea for 8 days now. It started last Wednesday and it was watery and just pouring out of me and it was constant like every 5-10 minutes. That went on for 5-6 days then it slowed down and I was having tar like stool in between and sometimes with diarrhea. Then it went to watery diarrhea again and dark stool. I have taken pepto bismol several times and immodium ad. What do I do? Can it be something serious?

Hi,

It can be infectious diarrhea. The infection can be in the form of bacterial or parasitic infection. According to cause specific treatment given.

You can investigate with stool routine micro examination and occult blood test to find the underlying cause. If pus cells and bacteria present then antibiotic should be given. If stool examination shows parasitic egg then Albendazole is needed to be prescribed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
