Hi, my Dad has had 2 heart attacks and has been diagnosed with copd. About a month ago he was coughing up so much foamy mucus that we went to the ER where they administered antibiodics and prednisone. He got so much better, but was tired all the time. Finally after adding iron, B-12, Vit. D, he starting feeling much much better. He woke up with a sore throat and cough yesterday and is back to the foamy mucus again. Should I give him prednisone and antibiodics again to get over this infection? I don t want him to suffer as long as he did last time and get worse?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice
COPD can be complicated by frequent exacerbation that is increase dyspnea, increased sputum and becoming unwell. This should be treated with antibiotics , steroids and frequent nebulization.
However, this thing should be better done by your doctor after assessment as there are other causes for it as well.
Steroid can be given for 7 days and up to 2 times a year better not more then this. Take the annual flu shot as well.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
