How Can Sore Throat And Cough Be Treated?

My 25 year went to the doctor today for a severe cold. Lots of drainage causing sore throats and cough. Had fluid in both ears. The doctor put her on Amox-clave 875mg, Prednisone 30mg and Benzonatate 200mg. Can she take Benadryl at night to help with sleep with these three other drugs? Tammy Burroughs

Hello,

As per your query, you have symptoms of sore throat and cough which are pointing towards upper respiratory tract infection and could be due to Eustachian tube dysfunction.

I would suggest you to do:
- Take steam inhalation along with vaporizers
- Start doing warm saline gargles
- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables to boost the immunity
- Avoid hot, sharp, spicy food
- Drink one spoon of honey mix with glass of lukewarm water

I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination. The doctor may order throat swab test and blood test to confirm the diagnosis and rule out causes. The doctor may prescribe antibacterial amoxicillin along with decongestants.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
