How Can Sore Throat And Discomfort In The Ears Be Treated?

My 24 y.o. daughter is overweight, has been experiencing frequent sore throats, complains of pressure in the throat pushing on her ears, and has been losing a lot of hair over the past six months. She has been checked for hypothyroidism, iron deficiency, and diabetes, but all tests have been negative so far. I m wondering what type of specialist she should see since her PCP is not helping her. She is on medication (omeptrazole) for acid reflux, but nothing else.

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of sore throat and discomfort in the ears which are pointing towards upper respiratory tract infection and infection sometimes spread through eustachian tube and cause discomfort in ear.

- Start doing warm saline gargles.
- Take steam inhalation along with vaporizers.
- Avoid hot, sharp , spicy food. avoid cold beverages.
- Drink one spoon of honey mix with glass of lukewarm water.

I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order throat swab test and blood test to confirm the diagnosis and rule out causes. Doctor may prescribe anti bacterial amoxicillin or anti viral acyclovir depending upon the diagnosis along with decongestants. Apply warm compresses on external ear and keep your ears dry.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
