How Can Swelling In The Knuckle Be Treated?

I got stuck by a sticker tree in texas, not a palm or mesquite. it was a direct hit into my knuckle. After 4 hours it swelled up and hurt a lot. It s been 4 weeks now and it still is swollen. I tried to puncture it but only a little blood came out. I don t think any thorn is in there. What can I do? I went to my doctor but he didn t help much.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There might be some collection of blood or lid underneath the skin. You can do an ultrasound to look for a collection. Start a short course of antibiotics like amoxicillin/clavulanate combination for five days empirically and anti inflammatory drugs like seratiopeptidase can be taken for faster recovery. If the swelling persist, better to consult an orthopedic and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
