How Can The Bow Legs Be Treated In Children?

Hello doctor! I want to ask about bow legs in 16 month old babies. Some say if the baby isn t properly massaged during his beginning months, it may result in bow legs. Is there anything to do with massaging? What are the causes and treatment? My son is 16 months old and had started walking when he was 1 year old. His left leg has more curve compared to his right leg. His weight is 14kg. Pl help

Pediatrician 's  Response
Dear user,

Massaging cannot reverse bow legs, and cannot cause it ... so stop worrying on that count. It can be normal for a child less than 2 years of age to look bowed at the knee. I would suggest going to a pediatrician for an Xray of the knees and the adjacent long bones, if there is any deformity. Also, the X ray will detect rickets, a very common nutritional illness. If rickets is found, treatment will have to be with Vitamin D and calcium.
