How Can Travellers Diarrhoea Be Treated If It Re-occurs After Completing A Course Of Ciprofloxacin?
Hey I’m traveling in Thailand, I recently had travellers diarrhoea, I took a 5 day course of Ciprofloxacin which cured it for a week then it came back so I took 3 days of ciprofloxacin. Again it cured for a week, but now it’s back again. Symptoms are mild mostly after I eat, I’m often fine in the morning then sick after I eat in the afternoon, I’m also burping more often. Is it okay to take a single 2gram dose of trinidazole to kill any Giardia or ameobiasis? Thanks
You are suffering from traveler's diarrhea. You have taken medicines for it but are getting relapses. You can take bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol), it will help to decrease the frequency of your stools and shorten the duration of your illness. Dehydration is the most likely complication of traveler's diarrhea, so it's important to try to stay well hydrated.
Take adequate quantity of water and fluids else you will start feeling weak. Make sure your vitals are normal. You are suggested to take a course of doxycycline-100 mg in case you have bacterial infection. Yes, you can take a single 1gm dose of tinidazole but it can cause severe constipation and stomach pain. It will be better to take 500mg tinidazole twice daily for 3-5 days. Stay well hydrated to help better bowel movement. Stay at rest, do not stress.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
