How do they fix the beast bone back together after a heart bypass operation? My mum needs a quadruple bypass operation and is worried about how the put the breast bone back together. she knows the use a saw to cut it and then spreader to open the area up, she saw and operation on television. They didn t show the end of the operation..Can anyone help put her mind at rest as she is worrying.

Ckm1956 is correct, The wire sutures holding the sternum together are permanent, but the stitches closing the skin will slowly dissolve as the skin heals within six weeks. The area needs to be kept clean and free from infection and sun exposure.
