How Long After Taking Metronidazole For Giardia Can One Try To Conceive?

Hi I ve been prescribed metronidazole for giardia. We are trying to conceive so concerned I may be pregnant so will wait to see if my period arrives next week before taking the tablets, however how long after taking the medication can we try again? I will be ovulating a few days or so after finishing the medication will it be out of my system by then?

Your concern here is absolutely right.Even though metronidazole has not found to cause any abnormality in the foetus ,it can cross the placental barrier and enter foetal circulation.

The dose of metronidazole becomes half in about 8 hours in the body(called plasma half life) and it takes about 5 days for it to be fully excreted ,if you are taking 500 mg of the drug.

Since you are taking it for some days the accumulated dose may be greater , so it better you give a fair time between stopping the drug and trying to conceive.I would suggest a months time before planning pregnancy to be absolutely sure.
