Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Long Before Colon Resection Surgery Should Smoking Be Stopped?
my BF is having a colon resection due to an andenomus polyp. He is a pretty heavy pot smoker, and cigerettes. I told him he needed to quit smoking before surgery. But, I m not sure how long should he quit prior to surgery? Thanks, just concerned for him.
Usually the protocol of smoking quitting is variable as per the hospital policies. In my hospital, to prevent unexpected outcomes in anesthesia or other medications efficiency, I recommend my surgical patients who are posted for major surgeries to quit smoking at least 4-5 days prior of the surgery.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel,
General Surgeon
