How Long Does Chlamydia Remain Contagious?

hello, i was recently diagnosed with chlymidia, and i was given 4 antibiotics and told not to have sex for 7 days. i had sex after 4 days however by that time the symptoms had pretty much gone and have remained gone. i heard that i would be un-contagious after 48 hours of taking the antibiotics....is this true?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

You have done a mistake by not following your doctors orders on the treatment of Chlamydia infection. It is to be treated with antibiotics as given by your doctor. You and your partner must be treated together and should not have sex for the treatment duration. It can remain contagious until the last bacteria is eradicated and that may take a week. You may watch yourself and your partner for persistent symptoms and then discuss with your doctor if necessary.
