How Long Is It Required To Take The Medication For Ulcerative Colitis?

Dear Doctor, I am an ulcerative colitis patient. About 4 months ago, I started to feel the onset of an active phase of the disease. I had a stool analysis. The result showed: Pus Cells: 8-10 R. B. Cs: 2-3 The doctor prescribed Pentasa. I had taken Pentasa 3 gm per day (2*500 mg three times a day) for over 2 months. During that period I could see blood and mucus in the stool. Over time, I felt better and I thought the active phase of the ulcerative colitis is over. To be sure, I had another stool analysis yesterday. The result shows: Pus cell: 3-5 R. B. Cs: 10-15 I don t see blood (as I used to do before) and I feel a lot better than at the time of the first analysis. Do I continue taking higher (than maintenance) dose of Pentasa? I am male 58 years old. Thanks for your reply.

Hi. Usually the initial treatment of UC is with Pentasa for 6-8 weeks, and then a gradual taper. It is common for symptoms to get better after only a couple days of treatment, but this longer course is to allow complete healing of your colon.

If this is your first episode, maintenance therapy is not necessary (but don't discontinue this medication without speaking with your doctor). If you are having >1 relapse per year or have proctosigmoiditis, then maintenance therapy IS recommended. You should follow your doctor's recommendation regarding the best dose of Pentasa to take.
