How Long Should Ciprofloxacin And Metronidazole Be Taken For Colitis?

Hello, I was in hospital last night with a great pain after (9 days) using Amoxicillin with Clarithromycin 2 times a day (to kill Helicobacter pillory). Doctor in hospital said I have colitis and gave me Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole. But today I start bleeding. Do I still need to take them or continue with medication prescribed by my doctor ? I also start using today Culturelle (probiotic) and yogurt with probiotics. Thank you !

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You need to know what type of colitis you have. Is it ulcerative colitis or infectious it Crohn's disease. Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Use probiotics twice a day for five days. Continue above antibiotics, get stool examination is done, get colonoscopy is done. It symptoms not improved please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

What you describe could sound like pseudomembranous colitis, and this should be treated with Vancomycin. If your doctor thinks it is ulcerative colitis, antibiotics is not the way to go, but you should instead see a gastroenterologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
