How Long Should I Wait Before Seeing A Doctor To Rule Out An Infection When I Get Soft Stool?

I am a 30 year old Male and for the past week I have had stool that goes from runny to soft. The stool is yellow and looks like it has mucus in it. I also have blood on the toilet paper after wiping. I have never had this before and am a little worried. How long should I wait before seeing a doctor to rule out an infection, colon cancer ect?

Hello,

1) Loose stool, presence of mucus in stool, occasional episodes of bleeding with stool suggest that you might have Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
2) In IBD, inner layer of large intestine become inflamed. Because of this inflammation, digestion also affects and this is the reason IBD causes loose stool with mucus.
3) Passing stool multiple times might be reason for development of anal fissure, which is the reason of noticing blood on toilet paper in your case.
4) IBD with anal fissure require further assessment to confirm the disease and detect the extent of disease.
5) As a self-measure, you can take probiotic supplement, avoid high fat containing food; to reduce severity of symptoms for certain extent.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
