How Long Will The Cough Take To Subside After Taking Levofloxacin?

I have had a bad cold all fall, the cat scan showed some emphysema but my Dr was very concerned about infection of the upper lobes and treated me with 10 days of Levofloxacin, 500 mg pr/day the last of these was 8 days ago and I still have a bad cough occasionally with some mucous. How long shouod this take to clear up? I feel much better but still have this cough at time that makes me dizzy trying to dispell the mucous. I had been treated with amoxicillan two weeks before the last AB's. Thank You, ROD

Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
You are having upper lobe infection and emphysema. Upper lobe infection is common with tuberculosis. You are not improving with two antibiotics (amoxicillin and levofloxacin) and still have coughing.
So we should definitely rule out tuberculosis in your case.
So get done sputum and BAL (bronchoalveolar lavage) examination for AFB (acid fast bacilli-bacteria causing tuberculosis).
If both are negative then no need to worry for tuberculosis.
Sometimes uncontrolled emphysema can also cause coughing. So you may need inhaled bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) to control emphysema.
So consult pulmonologist and discuss all these.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
