How Long Will The Swelling And Pain In Knee Due To Fall With History Of Having Chronic Adult Osgood Schlatter's Disease Be?

I am 53 years old and just came home from urgent care. I had a bad fall on my left knee last week and it wasn't getting better, on top of that it was on my bad knee that I have suffered through paid with since I was in my late teens. I was diagnosed with chronic adult Osgood Schlatter's disease. This is something that will never go away due to my age and the length of time I have had it My question is how long will I have the swelling and the pain?

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Generally, the soft tissue swelling resulting due to injury will subside within 2-3 weeks to attain the preinjury status.

Please follow the below mentioned general guidelines to hasten the recovery process -

- Protect the injured area from further injury by using a support or splint
- Rest the injured joint and don't involve in any activity that produces pain
- Apply ice wrapped in a damp towel to the injured area for 15 to 20 minutes every two to three hours during the day
- Use an elastic compression bandage around the injured area to limit any swelling. It should be wrapped snugly around the affected area but not so tightly that it restricts blood flow.
- Keep the injured area raised and supported on a pillow to help reduce swelling.
- Oral anti-inflammatory medications (such as Aleve or Motrin) can help relieve symptoms of pain and also calms the inflammation.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
