How Risky Is A Second Prolapse Surgery? Have Rectocele
How risky is a second prolapse surgery. My doc said I could have shortened vag or incontinant problems - or even a fistula!! It is stage 2 rectocele and 1 plus bladder . My doc that did the original surgery was a Mayo Specialist, and refused to do a second surg at this point. I do have a date booked, however, at another clinic. I was fitted for a pessary today, but I m afraid of the big bill with the insurance change in a few months. That is why I am rushing. The doc said I was too young for the 2nd surgery (52) and should save my last surg in case I need it down the road. What do you think? YYYY@YYYY (please don t publish my full name)
I am so sorry to hear about this recurrent pelvic prolapse.
The truth is surgery is only indicated when medical treatment fails. in this case, a repeat surgery would carry greater chances of failure and recurrence even higher. This is why I would suggest that you only get to do a second surgery when all non surgical interventions like the pesaries fail to provide you with an acceptable quality f life. Otherwise, please don't rush into surgery just yet because of a possible change in insurance policy. Please, this is your life and way more important than any future bills.
I don't want to suggest so but hope your doctor is accepting this procedure purely backed by medical findings and no motivation as to the payment. Please, strongly consider and maybe get a third opinion after examination about this.
I hope you find this helpful and guides you on the way forward. I wish you well. Dr. Ditah, MD
