How Should I Manage Fat Intake, Such As Choosing Whole Milk Versus Skimmed Milk While Exercising Regularly?

Hello, I am a 19 year old male of a healthy weight and I exercise regularly. I have no issues with cholesterol, fat in general, or anything of the sort. How should I go about fat macros? For example, should I replace whole milk with 2% milk? I hear that eating fat macros is normal and healthy as long as you don't eat excessive amounts of saturated fat. Thank you for your time.

Hello,

In my opinion, your approach to fat intake can be flexible. Since you are exercising regularly and are healthy, think balance, not restriction. If you have a family history of heart disease or if you are trying to lose weight, you may take skimmed milk otherwise it is better to take whole milk. Fat intakes depend on your energy needs.

Unsaturated sources like nuts, seeds, avocados, fatty fish are recommended and yes, olive oil is the best for heart health. Avoid trans-fat like processed baked goods, fried fast food, margarine. Never take packaged food. Fresh food is best for a healthy body. Yes, since you are only 19yrs of age, taking saturated fats in moderation is not harmful but beware of the portions you take. Stay away from any type of addictions.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
