How To Clean Stitches On Forearm?

My son is 6 and has 12 stitches on his left forearm. They were supposed to stay in for 14 days and now its been 16 days. They are red around the edges from playing outside the other day and it looks like the skin is kind of growing over the stitch. I don't know how to clean that stuff out... I plan on taking him to the doctor today to remove them.

the best thing to do is to get the stitches removed ASAP. the surrounding redness should then settle down.
